1:30-4:30 Pre-conference workshop

Dating 1840-1940 Photographs by Technologies and Formats

Frances Robb, art curator and photograph historian. Robb works as a consultant on projects, exhibitions, workshops and lectures on historic photographs and American cultural history in archives and museums.

This workshop uses slides, a hands-on activity, a handout and samples of historic 1840-1940 photographs to help archivists learn to date historic photography by technologies and formats. There will be time for discussion and questions. Participants are asked to bring puzzling photographs to the workshop for Robb’s assessment (for the most accurate dating, printouts should be the same size as the originals; uncropped and including their cardboard mounts, if any; and include fronts and backs.)
